JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. (WDRB) -- If you're going over the Kennedy Bridge in the next few months, you may notice some new equipment as temporary transponder readers were put up on Friday.
There are more than 10 and they look like little white rectangles attached to the bridge. They're just like what drivers will be seeing in a few years when tolls make their way to Kentuckiana.
The readers are not charging people tolls right now or collecting money. Instead, they gather information from drivers who may currently have transponders.
The devices are collecting data that will provide a rough number of how many out-of-state drivers would use the toll lanes.
"It's basically letting people know the cars that are moving through that corridor, do they have a transponder in place, what's their home state the vehicle class, all of that is information that's going to help Kentucky and Indiana as they develop a tolling policy," said Mindy Peterson with the Bridges Project/Downtown Crossing.
Tolling will start with the opening of the new bridge in 2016.
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet says the readers were active starting on Monday and will be up for about three months.
