Louisville, Ky. (July 27, 2016) – The Louisville-Southern Indiana Ohio River Bridges Project has released three new, short videos showing progress of construction of the East End Crossing.
The high-definition productions – shot entirely with drones this summer – provide:
- an overview of the East End portion of the project
- a close look at the nearly half-mile long cable-stayed bridge and its two towers
- a never-before-seen look at the nearly completed twin tunnels on the Kentucky side, including a peek inside. The 1,700-foot long tunnels are the second-longest in the state, behind only the Cumberland Gap tunnel.
“The East End Crossing is in an area that is not easily accessible to the public, so using a drone to show the progress and the scope of the work is the perfect way to give people a closer look at what’s being accomplished,” said Ron Heustis, project manager, Indiana Department of Transportation. “This is a once-in-a-lifetime project that will have a tremendous positive impact on the community for years to come.”
“Hundreds of talented men and women, both locally and around the globe, came together to create a bridge that will proudly serve this community for generations,” Rob Morphonios, project director for WVB East End Partners, said. “The progress we’ve made could not have been accomplished without their hard work.”
The videos – each less than two-and-a-half minutes long – are available on the East End Crossing site of the project website: http://ift.tt/2adZPKF.
The East End Crossing will connect eastern Jefferson County in Kentucky with southern Indiana just east of Jeffersonville. By creating a bypass around downtown Louisville, the project will improve safety and reduce traffic congestion. Plus, a trip that today takes 45 minutes, will take less than 10 minutes.
Construction of the East End Crossing began in the summer of 2013. The project is scheduled to be completed in December of this year. It is part of the $2.3 billion Louisville-Southern Indiana Ohio River Bridges Project, which also includes a new I-65 bridge connecting Louisville, KY and Jeffersonville, IN, as well as major highway improvements on both sides of the river.
